On Thursday, January 25, 2024 the Florida House of Representatives is honoring Jimmy Buffett and his love and dedication to Florida with Jimmy Buffett Day at the Florida State Capitol. Celebrating the life, music, legacy, and philanthropy of the iconic singer, songwriter, best-selling author, and environmentalist, the event coincides with two pieces of legislation: the Margaritaville Specialty License Plate and the AIA Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.
The day begins at 11:30am in the Florida House of Representatives Transportation & Modals Committee hearing both HB 403 by Rep Linda Chaney – Margaritaville Specialty License Plate, the proceeds going towards charitable foundation Singing for Change, and HB 91 by Rep Chuck Clemons – the AIA Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway, designating the entire stretch of historic AIA from the Georgia line to Key West.
The Florida Senate will be hearing their companion bills honoring Buffett, SB 434 by Sen Gayle Harrell and SB 84 by Sen Lauren Book, on Wednesday, January 24.
At 12:30pm, the House will hold a press conference celebrating Jimmy Buffett Day and the legislation on the 4th Floor Capitol Rotunda. Speakers will include the House and Senate bill sponsors, Singing for Change’s Executive Director Judith Ranger Smith, members of Jimmy’s family and Margaritaville’s CEO John Cohlan.
Additionally, at 12:45pm, Scotty Emerick, member of the Coral Reefer Band, will play a musical tribute to Jimmy in the Capitol Courtyard.
Radio Margaritaville will be in attendance to capture all the excitement for listeners from 11am – 2pm.
