Tryin to Reason with Collegiate Season

“Squalls out on the gulf stream. Big storm commin’ soon”

I saw the squall in August. Attempting to enjoy my summer – soaking up every last ounce of sunlight, golf, late nights, good sleep and being by the water –  I never wanted to look at the storm drawing near. It was creeping towards me, each and every day. I dreaded the idea of heading back to college.

Now, I’m being a little bit dramatic. I love school! I love my friends, classes, living situation, proximity from home, and (with the exception of their last few performances) my football team! The University of Michigan has been a blessing to me.

Why, then, am I comparing college to some ruthless hurricane? Let me explain.

First off, my name is Zach. I am a sophomore in the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. I love listening to music, watching football, getting involved in my community and spending time with those I hold most dear. I’m passionate about service, being active and taking pictures (like all of the pictures in this article!). And, like any 19 year old kid, I can really dread academia! The organization, the menial tasks, the classes that are based on two exams… it’s terrible sometimes! This year has already been a blur for me; leading a business fraternity rush process, volunteering, doing group homework and attending to personal matters has pulled to me to one particular Buffett lyric:

“And now I must confess, I could use some rest”

It’s been a while since I’ve had a nice night’s sleep. I’m sure other MargU ambassadors and college students would agree in saying there’s always a trickling feeling of exhaustion in collegiate life.

I, like Mr. Buffett, cannot run at this pace very long!

Then why do I love school so much?

“It cleans me out, and then I can go on.”

College, despite all of the trials, tribulations, exhausting days and sleepless nights, puts everything into perspective for me. Sure, I’d love to enjoy views like this every single day:

But right now, in this stage of my life, I can’t. I cannot speak on any other’s behalf, but I feel the need to earn the ability to enjoy a lifestyle like the ones above. Whenever I am in paradise, I enjoy it because it stands alone amongst my normal lifestyle.

To value and appreciate a “vacation” lifestyle, I need school. I need to be grounded… I need something that cleans me out so when I do move on, I’ll be grateful.

This is why I love the Margaritaville lifestyle. I can be in the “island state of mind” at any time and in any place. It’s a free, plentiful, and beautiful resource that I plan on tapping into as an ambassador of the brand. I am excited to spread this message of love and positivity across Ann Arbor and beyond.

Whenever you read this, challenge yourself to go to Margaritaville. It does not matter when or where you are. You’ll find it, I promise!

That’s all from me for now. Fins Up!

“It’s time to close the shutters

It’s time to go inside.”
