Concert review: Humphreys by the bay in San Diego

Jimmy and the Coral Reefers performed for an intimate crowd at Humphreys by the bay in San Diego on Tuesday, October 18th, for the first time since 1984! The San Diego Union-Tribune pointed out that it was the longest span between performances by any artist in the venue’s 35-year history.

ā€œThis feels like working at a big bar,ā€ Buffett said, in between ā€œLast Mango in Parisā€ and ā€œA Pirate Looks at Forty,ā€ theĀ 18th and 19th selections of his one-hour-and-56-minute concert. ā€œWeā€™re going to do a couple more of these things, where people (will) say: ā€˜Heā€™s playing where?!ā€™Ā ā€Ā Ā Ā

The other record Buffett set Tuesday, although impossible to preciselyĀ quantify, was the number of ā€œboat peopleā€ who listened and watched for free from the marina atĀ the right of the Humphreys stage.

They numbered in the hundreds andĀ appearedĀ to top the amount present for this Juneā€™s two Bob Dylan concerts at Humphreys and Stevie Wonderā€™s 2007 show there. On Tuesday, theyĀ stretched back the equivalent of several blocks, with fans inĀ vessels that ranged from canoes and kayaks to schooners and yachts.

ā€œWeā€™re going to send this to all of you out on the boats ā€”Ā hereā€™s aĀ sailing songĀ for you,ā€ Buffett said. He then launchedĀ into his fifth selection of the night, the engaging title track to his 1977 album, ā€œSon of a Son of Ā a Sailor.ā€
