50 Drinks in 50 States: A Washington Apple

Here’s something you probably didn’t know about Washington State: It’s ranked first in the country for producing pears, raspberries and apples. In fact, Washington produces more apples than any other state in the US. And if you put all of the Washington State apples picked in a year side by side, they would circle the earth 29 times. So. Many. Apples!

What better way to celebrate this delicious fruit than by toasting with an apple-inspired cocktail? As a drink, The Washington Apple is rising in popularity with many bars around the country serving the concoction as a martini, shooter or on the rocks. And with fall right around the corner, we’re nearing apple picking (and drinking) season. Here’s how to make your own.

Ingredients
1 oz Canadian Whiskey
1 oz sour apple schnapps
1 oz cranberry juice
Apple or orange slice for garnish

Make It
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an apple slice

Not always looking for that sophisticated, straight up martini feel? Here are two other takes on the Washington Apple:

On the rocks
Build the ingredients in an ice-filled old-fashioned or highball glass and stir. Add halved strawberry and garnish with an apple or an orange.

A shooter
Shake 1/2 ounce of each ingredient and strain into a chilled shot glass.

Pro tip: Some drinkers prefer their Washington Apple with a splash of soda.
